Messier Objects Catalogue

The Messier list which currently contains 110 objects was first compiled in the mid 1700’s by Frenchman Charles Messier.  The objects, a mix of Nebulae, Galaxies and Star Clusters (and the double star M40) are all visible with modest equipment making them a prime target for amateur astronomers.

While all the Messier objects are visible from the Northern hemisphere Monsieur Messier made his observations 5 degrees further South than Ty Du Observatory and therefore some objects are too low in the sky to view from here.

With the Messier list being made up of mostly bright objects my catalogue contains many duplicate images taken with different cameras and for this reason I’ll dedicate a whole page to some objects where I have multiple images. I’ll provide links to Wikipedia where possible to provide additional information about the objects and give an idea of what they should look like.
